Sundheim's plan to clear the field for a single Republican depends largely on what the Democrats do. If Davis can continue to keep any Democrats from signing up for the replacement vote, it becomes a free-for-all for Republicans,

independents and third-party candidates. But if any Democrats jump in, the politics of the race change dramatically.

"If the Democrats don't put up anyone, the more Republicans the merrier, since it gives voters more flavors to choose from," McClintock said. "But if the Democrats settle on a single candidate (to replace Davis), then the Republican party needs to start narrowing the field."
